Wular Lake or Wullar, One of the largest fresh water lake in Asia, is in Bandipora district The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River. The lake's size varies seasonally from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square kilometers). Boating, water sports and water ski have recently been launched by the J&K Tourism. The lake, with its big dimensions and the extent of water, gives rise to high leaping waves in the afternoons, called Ullola in Sanskrit; meaning stormy leaping, high rising waves. The origin may also be attributed to a Kashmiri word 'Wul', which means a gap or a fissure. Wular Lake is also important for fish habitat, Fish from Wular Lake make up a significant part of the diet for many thousands of people living on its shores and elsewhere in the Kashmir Valley. The lake sustains a rich population of birds. Terrestrial birds observed around the lake .

 Watlab:-

Gradually, the panoply of the 'real Kashmir', miles away from well-traversed areas, will unfold before you, and you will reach Watlab. Here, high on a hilltop is the shrine of a Muslim mystic, Baba Shukurddin. From here, the Wular Lake stretches away as far as the eye can see, edged by picturesque villages around terraced breeze-rippled fields of paddy, in a riotous burst of colour. At Watlab there is a Forest Rest House amidst sprawling apple orchards.You can rest here to enjoy the sheer grandeur of the spectacular countryside at leisure.

Sopar:-

Sopur, at the south end of the lake where the Jhelum leaves it, is noted for its fruit growing - particularly Apples and Walnuts. This apple town of kashmir is famous as “ chhotta Londan” for its most modern houses & well off famlies. The main resort town for the lake is Ningal Nullah, 5-km from Sopur. From here one can hire sailing boats to cruise on the lake or for fishing. Sopor offers a marketplace and many small local shops that will fascinate the visitor.

Lolab And Bungus Valley:-

Lolab valley is 7 km away from kupwara it surrounded by dense forest mountains, mostly deodar trees lolab means lovful water signifying the love & beauty of this unexploited destination .it can be reach either by a road from Sopur or by following the bridal path from Kiuhnus. To the west of the Lolab valley there is an extensive flat meadow called Bungas, at 2,896 metres above sea level and 114-km from Srinagar. It's like an undeveloped Gulmarg, its virgin valley . the area has the line of control at very close distance .Baungus valley has a very large no of streams like Roshan Kul, Tilwan Kul, & Dod kul which join kamil river & further form the lolab stream. & adjacent villages of Karna , Keran & Tangdar are connected by treks & paths to Bungus which offered charismatic scenes. It is an ideal place for trekking , camping & safaris.

Bandipur:- situated on the banks of wular lake, its 65 kms from Srinagar via Sumbal Raod the main town has been part of silk route in early times .& also famous for its woven blankets,. On the northwest side of the lake, near Ashtiung, there is a Ziarat or shrine to Baba Shukur-ud-Din, a disciple or the saint Nur-ud-Din. Towards the eastern side is the most attractive mount Harmukh which has been an attracting mountaineers for ages. The arin Nallah in the region is famous for Rainbow, Silver & great Trouts .

Baramula:-

Baramula, to the south west of the lake, was on the main route to Rawalpindi, the chief route from Kashmir to the Indian plains prior to independence. Roads also run from here to Gilgit and Hunza, into what is now the restricted zone controlled by Pakistan. Its one of the biggest district of the valley & has the highest yield of Horticulture produce. Baramullah was known as the “ Gateway to Kashmir “at it used to be a stop over in past. Many renowned travellers like Hieun Stang , Moor Croft Empror Akbar & Jahangior has stayed in Baramullah while travlling to the vale of Kashmir.
